Abstract: The author delivered the paper "The genesis of Nigeria's external debt problems: problems and prospects for debt conversion programme for Nigeria" as a background to the central theme of the Workshop titled "The proposed operations of Nigeria's debt conversion programme. This presentation is divided into four sections: Part 1 deals with the genesis of Nigeria's debt problems. Part 2 highlights the rationale of debt conversion and the general problems associated with it. Part 3 sketches the prospects of debt conversion in Nigeria while part 4 contains the summary and some concluding remarks.
