Abstract: In this article, there's a presentation of an analysis of the activities of Nigeria's insurance companies during 1986. The analysis is based on data extracted from the returns submitted by insurance companies to the Insurance Division of the Federal Ministry of Finance. At the time the survey was conducted, 80 companies or 90.9 per cent of the Insurance companies operating in Nigeria during the review period had submitted their returns. The data compiled were however adjusted for non-response. The report is divided into five parts. Part 1 treats the structure and performance of the insurance industry while Parts 2 and 3 examine separately, the performance of life and non-life insurance business respectively. Part 4 discusses the assets and investment pattern of the insurance companies while Part 5 contains the summary and conclusion.
